Totnes House

Totnes House, a grand Victorian villa built in 1889 as a gentleman’s club, later became a Conservative club before falling into disrepair. TV producer Jonney Steven and his family saw its potential, undertaking the ambitious restoration of the Grade II listed building to create a distinctive family home in the heart of Totnes, Devon.

Defined by high ceilings and rich architectural character, Totnes House gradually revealed its hidden features as Jonney and his family began removing layers of modern alterations. Their vision was clear: to restore and celebrate as many original details as possible, while carefully introducing modern functionality that respected the building’s heritage.

One of the most remarkable transformations took place in what was once the gentlemen’s urinals. This unlikely space has been reimagined as a dual-purpose downstairs cloakroom and bathroom for Jonney’s son, Teddy.

The result is a characterful yet highly functional room, blending clever design with a sense of discovery.

We are absolutely thrilled with the transformation of the old gents’ loo into a fabulous downstairs bathroom, complete with a secret shower hidden behind an arch. The shower is so powerful – it’s brilliant! A decent shower gets the day off to a good start, and the Bayor brushed brass shower, with its ceiling-mounted rose, really completes the space.

The bathroom is finished with a Tamar Ceramic Pedestal and matching toilet.

The Bayor three-hole basin mixer and coordinating accessories, including a robe hook, toilet roll holder, and towel ring. A Tamar close-coupled toilet, paired with a matching pedestal, completes the scheme.

Jonney selected a brushed brass finish to achieve a warm, understated elegance while ensuring durability in a high-use space.

We chose brushed brass for this bathroom as it’s a busy, hardworking room. The brushed finish is easier to maintain, and it looks fantastic – retaining a soft, consistent golden tone.
